A host of inexpensive luxury lodging housed in refurbished heritage structures have actually mushroomed in George Town’s heritage area. One such location is Noordin Mews that Su Aziz finds both contemporary and unchanging in its building’s old appeal.

With its heavily carved antique wooden doors is a break from Lebuh Noordin’s everyday bustle of cars and owners running a variety of small companies from neighbouring shop homes. These exact same doors open right away to a reception area similar to a Nonya sitting location that blocks the bright and open home behind it.

Walking in more reveals a dining location that only serves morning meal to guests and a courtyard where a rectangular, medium-sized swimming pool sits. Covering the spectacular blue pool is the hotel’s 2 Shop House suites and 14 basic Mews rooms located on 2 floors.

Despite its heritage environment and building, three-month old Noordin Mews exhibits a contemporary, minimalistic feel. Swathed in primarily stunning white paint with gray accents on its walls, it appears to be a perfect canvas for unanticipated peculiar antique showpieces to shine from a few corners. There’s an old Vespa on screen above the staircase and a glass vanity cabinet in each room showing old grooming products such as hair oil, aftershave and face powder.

The spaces are all geared up with a huge en-suite washroom and are large with built in beds underneath thick mattresses covered in crisp, white sheets. For additional convenience, the spaces have armchairs, an antique dressing table, closet area, flat screen television, wifi and are air conditioned to fend off the island’s tropical heat.

Although the space rates of RM250 for a basic room for two individuals and up to RM550 for the huge suite with a linking space for 5 individuals include breakfast, there’s no lunch or supper served in their dining room. Which is not a problem considering that the hotel’s covered by eateries serving wonderful food. For those wishing to sink their teeth into bites of neighborhood fare, there’s Cecil Market with plenty of hawker food, Little Kitchen that has Nyonya meals and buying malls such as 1st Avenue and Prangin Mall nearby that residence familiar worldwide restaurant chains.
